The Report. Prime Video. 6/10.
The Report is the latest addition to writer and director Scott Burns' filmography. This picture follows the story behind senate staffer Dan Jones, and his extraordinary investigation into the CIA's deranging interrogative tactics proceeding the events that occurred on the morning of 9/11. Director Scott Burns is audacious in presenting the hard-hitting gruesome actions committed by one of the most sophisticated intelligence organizations in the world. Burns is most notably recognized for his work on the cult and critically acclaimed film Contagion, a film that was able to successfully establish his tone of work, being a mix of Noireist investigative narratives with hyper-realistic dramatic structures. This film is no different in its tone, Burns is able to successfully tell this story in his most primitive essence. However, despite the clear plot and message from the film, there isn't much to get out of it. It is a highly informative movie, but unremarkable in doing so. The acting provided by Hollywood's next IT actor, Adam Driver, is exceptionally the highlight of the film. Driver is able to effortlessly showcase the true depth and intellectual capacity of Dan Jones, not only through his extensive investigation but also through his personal realization and disgust in the federal system. The cinematography in this film was solid and without fault however, it is safe to say that there was nothing striking to recount. The dialogue was captivating with ease considering the material that was given to the screenwriter, however, it could be said that at times one could find themselves lost and a bit confused as to what was being argued. Overall I enjoyed this film, I thought it was a solid picture with a lot to say about government regulation and owning up to mistakes. This film could have been a bit more memorable but it still remained a riveting and educating watch. I would recommend this movie to you if you are someone who is fascinated by government scandals and the truth that unmasks the facade of the fear tactics imposed by the intelligence community.
