The Wrong Missy. Netflix. 3/10

The Wrong Missy is the latest Netflix exclusive release written by comedy titans Chris Pappas and Kevin Barnett. This picture follows the story of Tim Morris and the delirious events that occur one weekend after he mistakenly invites the wrong girl to a corporate retreat. This picture was a directorial debut by Tyler Spindel, most notably recognized for his work on the cult classics House Bunny and Paul Blart: Mall Cop. I'm personally a huge comedy nerd. I always find myself at three in the morning on my Instagram feed laughing at stand up comedy clips, movie clips, and even some comedy interviews. I grew up with some of the biggest comics in the 21st century, star powers like Adam Sandler, Will Ferrell, Tina Fey, Judd Apatow, and so many more that dominated the early 2000's. To be frank, when I first saw the poster for this movie I wasn't too excited. Primarily because I've never been a fan of David Spade's comedy, I find his humor to be so lifeless, unimportant, and like so many other forgettable comics, moronic.  But after seeing the writing credits, I got myself excited for a return to that age of comedy I grew up loving. Well, it looks like I should've bitten my tongue. This movie was not good! The directing was strange, awkward, and at times very uncomfortable. The acting in this movie felt like the talent, washed up and desperate for the slightest glimpse of a laugh. There is not much to say about any aspect of this movie. I understand this is a goofy comedy and to be so critical could be seen as pretentious or nit-picky. However, I disagree, I think that any movie can and should be made properly with the right intentions. Some examples of excellent movies that are also comedies are Tropic Thunder, Anchorman, and Bridesmaids. All comedies that also happen to be excellent movies. The jokes in this movie felt amateurish, childish, and like something put together last minute in an effort to meet a deadline, kind of like what you might find in late-night tv. The highlight of this movie could easily be the energy and excitement brought into the picture by the new Lauren Lapkus (Missy). Her performance outshined almost all of the comedic legends in the movie, proving that sometimes newer is better. The cinematography was stale. The editing gave me a headache midway through the movie, while also having me confused in what should have been hilarious scenes such as the shark cage scene. This was in all honestly a failure. I have nothing more to say about this movie except if you enjoy cringe-fest movies (not the good kind) with predictable comedy then get the popcorn and be ready for the time of your life.
